Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has a very difficult task ahead of him if he is to save the island's economy, a government spokesman said on Sunday, as a high-level meeting would convene in Brussels to discuss Cyprus before Sunday evening's Eurogroup meeting of eurozone finance ministers.

Anastasiades and his Finance Minister Michalis Sarris have arrived in Brussels in an 11th-hour effort to strike a deal with the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund to avert bankruptcy for Cyprus.

Spokesman Christos Stylianides said on Sunday morning that Anastasiades and his team have a "very difficult task to accomplish to save the Cypriot economy and avert a disorderly default if there is no final agreement on a loan accord."

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy will chair a high-level meeting on Cyprus before the Eurogroup meeting at 7 p.m., European Council spokesman Preben Aaman said on Sunday.

He could not confirm who would participate in the meeting.
