Three days after 11 inmates escaped from Trikala prison in central Greece following an unprecedented attack against guards involving grenades and automatic weapons, police were Monday seeking five suspects believed to be connected to the breakout.

Early Monday, a group of men attacked a couple sitting inside a car parked next to the forest along the Lamia ring road in a bid to steal the vehicle. The driver managed to speed off, injuring one of the assailants.

The driver later informed the police, who sent several men and a helicopter to search the area using thermal cameras.

Earlier, a private security worker reportedly saw five men inside a car at a company parking lot near the Lamia state hospital. When he approached the car, the suspects allegedly ran away into the dark.

The escape from Trikala prison on Friday evening involved outsiders attacking the facility with Kalashnikovs and hand grenades. Two guards were injured – one of them seriously.

All 11 fugitives are Albanian nationals convicted of crimes including armed robbery. Three have been caught, one of whom is believed to be the mastermind behind the escape.
