Former AEK chairman and star striker Demis Nikolaidis is to stand trial for alleged debts of 35 million euros that the Athens soccer club ran up between 2004 and 2008.

Nikolaidis appeared at police headquarters of his own volition on Thursday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. A prosecutor then released the 39-year-old pending trial.

Financial prosecutors last week ordered the arrest of all AEK chairmen since 2004. The Athens club owes just over 170 million euros in unpaid taxes. Nikolaidis welcomed the probe and insisted he left AEK in 2008 with no debts to the state.

Nikolaidis, married to singer Despina Vandi, also played for Atletico Madrid during his successful career.
