The Supreme Court has appointed two top judicial officials as “corruption prosecutors” in a bid to plow through a plethora of cases of alleged graft and mismanagement of public money.
Athens First Instance Court prosecutor Eleni Raikou is to hold the post in the capital while appeals court prosecutor Argyris Dimopoulos is to take the job in Thessaloniki. Raikou played a key role in getting former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos to face justice for millions of euros in kickbacks he is alleged to have pocketed from defense contracts.

Raikou’s new job will be to bring to task other state functionaries found to have mismanaged state money. Dimopoulos will do the same in Thessaloniki, where former Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos was jailed for life in February for embezzlement. Both are to play a key role in speeding up existing corruption probes and will be able to recruit a team of prosecutors to flank them.
