A project to introduce electronic tickets and ticket barriers on the Athens metro is gathering pace as the Development Ministry announced on Wednesday that the six companies competing to take on the scheme have to submit final offers in July.
The government hopes that the scheme will help cut down on fare dodging, which is estimated to cost the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) up to 37.5 million euros a year. The ministry also hopes to announce in two weeks who will be responsible for installing telematic systems at 100 public transport stops and stations, allowing passengers to get travel information on their mobile phones or computers.
