Greece may grant residence to Manolada shooting victims

The Interior Ministry is examining the possibility of granting residence permits for humanitarian reasons to the Bangladeshi nationals who were injured in Wednesday’s shooting by farm supervisors in Nea Manolada, in the Peloponnese, Deputy Interior Minister Haralambos Athanassiou said on Friday.

“The unacceptable developments in Manolada highlight the need to fight racist attitudes on the one hand and to tackle the problem of undeclared labor on the other,” Athanassiou said, adding that the unprecedented assault on the workers was “a criminal act that undermines our country on an international level.”

Earlier in the day, Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias visited three of the shooting victims who are being treated for their injuries at the main university hospital in Patra. During his visit, the minister emphasized that the victims of the shooting would not be deported as had been suggested by the main leftist opposition party SYRIZA.
