Transport Minister Makis Voridis announced on Thursday the concession of the Athens metro line extension from Haidari to Piraeus to a joint venture made up of J&P Avax, Alstom Transport and Ghella, a project worth 660 million euros.
The extension to Line 3 will add six stations to the network (Aghia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia, Maniatika, Piraeus Port and Dimotiko Theatro) and will be completed by 2017.
It will bring Athens Airport to within one hour from Piraeus.
Voridis added that the contract for the signal system at seven other new stations will be signed with Siemens in the next two weeks, so the stations can come online within 12 months.
He also expects positive developments for the country’s five long-stalled major road projects.
