A Thessaloniki prosecutor ordered an investigation on Monday into repeated protests by municipal contract workers that have disrupted meetings of the city council.
There have been three such demonstrations in recent days as employees in the sanitation department attempt to obtain guarantees that they will have their contracts renewed.
Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris (photo) has refused to give such promises.
“The municipality cannot meet their demands,” he said.
“It does not have the money to pay this staff.”
