Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is undergoing on Saturday morning an eye surgery at a state hospital in Athens, while new Finance Minister Vassilis Rapanos will spend the weekend in a private hospital for tests after feeling faint on Friday.

State radio NET FM reported that Samaras, 61, is undergoing a surgery for a detached retina at the Attiko Hospital with a light anaesthesia and is likely to stay in hospital for one day. The routine surgery was planned to last for about one hour.

Rapanos remains at Hygeia hospital for tests after arriving there on Friday afternoon with intense abdominal pain, dizziness, nausea and sweating, according to a statement by the hospital. He is likely to be discharged on Sunday.

Sixty-five-year-old Rapanos is yet to be sworn in as Finance Minister, with caretaker Giorgos Zannias still holding the portfolio for the time being.

On Friday evening the new Deputy Ministers of Finance, Giorgos Mavraganis, and for Foreign Affairs, Dimitris Kourkoulas took their oath, as they had been unable to swear in with the rest of the government on Thursday.
