Three more arrests made on Santorini over Easter injuries

Two men aged 28 and 24, and a 16-year-old teenage boy were arrested early on Tuesday in connection with a large firecracker that was thrown into a church courtyard on the island of Santorini during Easter celebrations on Saturday night, seriously injuring an American tourist and another six people attending the service.

Another two men, aged 23 and 34, arrested on Sunday face charges of causing grievous bodily harm and of breaching firearms laws.

The American woman, aged 51, was one of seven people injured when a firecracker with a large amount of gunpowder was thrown into the courtyard of a church in the popular tourist destination of Oia. Three of those injured suffered burns and were hospitalized. Another three suffered minor injuries and needed only first aid treatment.

The American woman was flown to the Venizelio Hospital in Iraklio, Crete, where she underwent stomach surgery. She is said to be in critical condition, though the director of the hospital on Tuesday said that tests have shown a “small improvement.”
