Two Romanians arrested after sex slave turns them in

Police in Thessaloniki on Tuesday arrested two Romanian nationals and were seeking another two suspects in connection with the allegations of a 28-year-old woman who said that she had been held against her will and forced to perform sexual acts.

The young woman, whose name was not made public, told investigating officers in the northern Greek port city that she had been held against her will since June last year by a group of compatriots who had promised her a good job in Greece.

She said that she was originally held in a goat shack in a rural part of Larissa in central Greece, where she was repeatedly raped by a Romanian man who worked at an adjacent livestock farm and who is currently being sought by authorities.

A few days later she was allegedly picked up by the two suspects who are currently under arrest – a 31-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman – and taken to a house in Trikala, where she was forced to work without pay and threatened into performing sexual acts for money that was then collected by the couple. She told investigators that the couple would lock her up in a room in the house and stand guard so she could not escape.

The 28-year-old, however, told the police that on Monday she managed to convince her male captor that her family would be looking for her and talk him into releasing her and boarding her on a bus to Thessaloniki so she could make her way back home.

The young woman, who is currently four months pregnant, promptly headed to Thessaloniki’s main police headquarters, where she detailed her ordeal to investigators.

She is currently receiving mental and health support from a non-governmental organization, as authorities seek the other parties involved in the incident.
