Greece’s official population at 10.8 mln, census finds

Foreigners make up 8.4 percent of the country’s population, final data from the 2011 census showed.

According to figures made available by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Saturday, 708,003 residents were born outside the European Union compared to 199,101 who were born in an EU country other than Greece. The nationality of 4,825 people was unspecified.

The majority of non-Greek residents – 52.7 percent – were born in Albania.

Greece’s total population is 10,815,197, more than 1 percent smaller than the 10,934,097 recorded in 2001, when the last census was carried out – although experts warned that the data were not directly comparable, because of differences in methodology.

At 5,512,494, women make up 51 percent of the population.

More than half of the population – 50.3 percent – are married, the data revealed, while the average household was found to comprise 2.6 persons.
